Plagiarism and Similarity Policy
The Brazilian Journal of Dentistry and Oral Radiology (BJDOR) maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy toward plagiarism, in accordance with international standards of research integrity and editorial best practices. All submitted manuscripts undergo similarity screening prior to peer review.
Definition of plagiarism
For BJDOR, plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:
-
verbatim copying without proper citation;
-
substantial paraphrasing without attribution;
-
unauthorized use of ideas, data, tables, figures, or images;
-
self-plagiarism (reuse of previously published text without disclosure);
-
duplicate or redundant publication;
-
translation of previously published material without acknowledgment.
Initial similarity screening
All submissions are analyzed using specialized similarity-detection software prior to editorial assessment.
General parameters
-
An overall similarity index of approximately 15% may be acceptable, provided that:
-
there is no significant overlap from a single source;
-
similar content corresponds to properly cited material;
-
overlap occurs in standardized methodological descriptions.
-
Evaluation is not based solely on numerical percentage, but also on qualitative assessment of context.
Action in cases of high similarity
If excessive or unjustified similarity is identified, BJDOR may:
-
request clarification or revision;
-
reject the manuscript prior to peer review;
-
notify the authors’ institution in severe cases.
Post-publication detection
If plagiarism or ethical misconduct is identified after publication, the journal may:
-
issue a formal correction;
-
publish a retraction;
-
notify relevant institutions;
-
take additional actions in accordance with COPE guidelines.
Author responsibility
By submitting a manuscript, authors confirm that:
-
the work is original;
-
all sources are properly cited;
-
no undisclosed duplicate or redundant publication exists;
-
use of artificial intelligence tools did not result in unauthorized reproduction of protected content.
BJDOR reserves the right to conduct additional integrity checks at any stage of the editorial process.
