Use of Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI)
The Brazilian Journal of Dentistry and Oral Radiology (BJDOR) recognizes that Generative Artificial Intelligence (GenAI) tools, including language models, text generators, and image or code generation systems, may be used to support research and manuscript preparation. However, their use must be transparent, responsible, and ethically appropriate, in line with international best practices in scholarly publishing.
Permitted use
GenAI tools may be used only as supportive aids, for example:
-
language editing and grammar correction
-
improving clarity, organization, and readability
-
assistance with manuscript formatting or structure
-
technical support in figure or image preparation, provided scientific content is not altered
In all cases, authors must critically review the output and retain full responsibility for the final content.
Prohibited use
GenAI must not be used to:
-
generate original research data, results, or scientific analyses
-
fabricate, falsify, manipulate, or alter data, images, evidence, or references
-
replace essential intellectual contributions of the authors
-
produce clinical interpretations or conclusions without rigorous human verification
GenAI tools cannot be listed as authors, as they cannot assume legal or scientific responsibility for the work.
Mandatory disclosure
If GenAI tools were used, authors must explicitly disclose in the manuscript:
-
the name of the tool
-
the purpose of its use (e.g., language editing or structural assistance)
-
confirmation that the authors reviewed the content and take full responsibility for it
Failure to disclose GenAI use or misuse of such tools may result in manuscript rejection, article retraction, or other editorial actions, in accordance with the journal’s ethical policies.
Author responsibility
Regardless of GenAI use, all authors remain fully responsible for:
-
originality of the work
-
accuracy of data, analyses, and interpretations
-
compliance with ethical, legal, and copyright standards
-
the scientific integrity of the submission
BJDOR follows international recommendations on the responsible use of AI in scholarly publishing, including guidance from COPE, ICMJE, and widely adopted editorial standards.
