Comparative Evaluation of Residual Bone Height of Edentulous Mandibular Posterior Region Using RVG and CBCT for Implant Planning
Main Article Content
Abstract
The present study aims to evaluate and compare the reliability of RVG and CBCT in measuring residual bone height from the superior border of the mandibular canal in the edentulous mandibular posterior region, with particular reference to the horizontal position of the alveolar crest. Under RVG & CBCT standardization protocol, with appropriate radiographic techniques, radiographs were taken. Bone height of edentulous mandibular posterior region was evaluated from radiopaque point on residual alveolar crest to the superior border of the mandibular canal. The study demonstrates that both CBCT and RVG measurements are normally distributed and highly correlated (r = 0.981, p < 0.001). Although RVG shows slightly higher measurements compared to CBCT, the difference is statistically significant (p = 0.002) but clinically small (mean difference = 0.475 mm,). The Bland–Altman analysis further confirms good agreement with minimal bias, indicating that both modalities can be used interchangeably with caution regarding the slight systematic difference. The vertical height determination from the superior border of the mandibular canal can be done using both CBCT & RVG, as there stands no significant difference between accuracy. Considering radiation exposure, RVG serves a key role for height evaluation for implant planning and during implant placement.
